Support the Cause
Your generous donations help TLC provide resources to Indigenous communities around the world as they work to revitalise their ancestral languages. With your help, these communities will once again resound with the excited voices of the youngest generation speaking the languages of their peoples as they proudly take part in the culture their language encapsulates
At the time of European settlement in 1788, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people spoke about 250 different Indigenous Australian languages. Sadly, many of these languages were lost as government programmes, schools, missions, and new settlements silenced speakers. Only about 100 of these languages are spoken today and many are sleeping waiting to be reawakened.
Today, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia are speaking out about the need to maintain, preserve, and strengthen Indigenous Australian languages. There is a wave of activity, with people in many communities working to learn more about their languages, and to ensure they are passed onto the next generation.
